The National Museum of African American History and Culture

National Museum of African American History and Culture  “It reaffirms that all of us are America — that African-American history is not somehow separate from our larger American story, it’s not the underside of the American story, it is central to the American story.” – Barack Obama

Although I was in DC on the opening day of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, I didn’t get to visit at the time since I didn’t have tickets. Even though the National Museum of African American History and Culture is a free museum, like the other Smithsonian museums, tickets (which you can request for free online) are needed to visit. Long story short, I finally got tickets to visit (I requested the tickets in August and I got to visit in December) and I can’t even put into words how excited I was to visit!

Here are a few photos from my visit the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC:National Museum of African American History and Culture  National Museum of African American History and Culture
Admittedly I didn’t take that many photos while I was at the National Museum of African American History and Culture. For one, since it was my first time visiting the museum (and who knows when I’ll get the chance to visit again) I really wanted to “see” the museum myself and not through a lens. Also several parts of the museum were somewhat dark (lighting wise).

Since I didn’t take that many photos while at the National Museum of African American History and Culture, I was contemplating even doing a post about my visit but I then I thought “why not!”. Whenever I’m traveling (whether it be a work thing or personal), I make it a note to enjoy the moment and not blog. Which means whenever I get back home from a trip I’ll left playing catch up. So here’s post one from my travels last week (I have three really fun posts to share from my trip to NYC!). The National Museum of African American History and Culture is the only national museum devoted exclusively to the documentation of African American life, history, and culture.

I’m not going to lie, I cried more than once during my visit to the National Museum of African American History and Culture. As a black woman it really saddens me how the culture and history of African-Americans, of MY ancestors, is often swept under the rug. It’s like America doesn’t want to acknowledge OUR (as in American AND African-American) dark history. I don’t want to go off on a tangent (because I will) or get to political or “preachy” but let’s call a spade a spade.National Museum of African American History and Culture
I always giggle to myself when people quote the Declaration of Independence and say that “all men are created equal” because based on the actions of our govermnet, clearly that isn’t the case. But I digress.National Museum of African American History and Culture  National Museum of African American History and Culture

I really want to take my mom and grandmother to the National Museum of African American History and Culture this summer (which means I’ll have to request tickets in April or May!). If you’re ever in the DC area and can snag tickets (they also release a few “day of” tickets) I HIGHLY recommend stopping by the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
